The Different Types of Portable Toilets

Whether you own a retail store, school, office or warehouse, when you are going through a washroom renovation, you will need to consider the portable toilets available. This is especially important in commercial industries where you have high foot traffic and a large number of people relying on the facilities. It is also highly likely that your business will need to adhere to a number of regulations whilst going through a refurbishment, one of which will be to provide alternative toilet facilities for customers, visitors, students or staff.

Get prepared for your projects with our top tips for stress-free office refurbishment.

Depending on how many people you have on the premises, what your day-to-day dynamic is and how often the facilities are used, there are a number of different options available.

Standard portable toilet

A standard portable toilet refers to a single, self-contained unit that can be used by one person at a time. This option uses a chemical flushing system, where waste is broken down in a holding tank to minimise odours and offer a hygienic function appropriate for a range of environments.

Hot wash site toilet

Hot wash toilets are the same as standard cubicles with the addition of hot water. Each unit can be used by one person at a time with a chemical flush and holding tank but is also equipped with hot water sinks for HSE-compliant hand washing.

Mains connected

Especially useful for offices and workplaces, a mains-connected portable toilet is connected to your mains water access. This provides full flushing functionality with no need for emptying or water replenishment. These systems are unsuitable for remote locations without mains water access.

Accessible portable toilet

Accessible toilets allow you to cater for disabled guests or employees in a flexible, easy way. Accessible cubicles are larger than the standard versions, with a few extra facilities to ensure that staff, customers and visitors have everything they need. These cubicles are also fitted with a larger door to allow for wheelchair access, handholds to assist with mobility and floor space for moving around, sitting down, and standing up.

Compost portable toilets

Compost portable toilets are water and chemical-free. Waste is collected for eco-friendly disposal and are ideal for eco-friendly events or campsites where infrequent use is required.

Long drop

Also known as a pit latrine, this portable toilet system is characterised by a long drop underneath. A toilet opening and seat are positioned above the drop, gradually filling up over time, offering an eco-friendly solution with compostable waste and less maintenance.

Things to consider when choosing a commercial portable toilet

Depending on your business, there will be a number of things you will want to consider when it comes to the type of portable toilet you need and would benefit from. Here are a few things you should think about when planning your portable toilets:

  • How often will they need to be used
  • How many do you need
  • Where will they be set up and are there systems and mains nearby
  • How long will you need them for
  • What is your budget
  • Do you require accessible cubicles and any other alternative toilet type e.g. changing rooms, urinals or shower cubicles
